Favourite Five

Favourite Five: Hair today, gone tomorrow?

Who said men don’t care about their appearance. If anything, these days they take longer than womenfolk to get ready. At the end of the day it’s not down to your sex anymore, it’s about how much care and attention you want to lather yourself in. Some pretty cool ‘grooming’ spots are dotted around with the normal in-out barber experiences becoming a thing of the past. These ‘super’ barbers offer proper facials and hair treatments galore so with an increased love of beards, it makes more sense than ever to maintain the fluff. We chose our Favourite Five that we would send our brothers, partners and mates too.

Murdock London
Now this one makes me jealous. I want some of the action they are giving. Their website is slick, almost like a lifestyle blog, but the meat is there on the bones. They shave, do face and body treatments, look after your beard and have even extended beyond with their own grooming products. Their shops are welcoming with a cool looking team who ooze bags of experience. I want to be a boy!!! (stamps feet). Here, you are  definitely in safe hands. The Bike Shed
One of my favourite places in London. A motorcycle club right here in the big smoke. Not quite Sons of Anarchy, but still cool as F. Although I may not know a frame from a suspension, there is something to be said about coming here to the bar, restaurant, lounge and retail space where some gorgeous motorbikes are on display. The boys will certainly be impressed with this one and slap bang in the middle is a barber. Cuts and shaves happen to a soundtrack of blues, rock’n’roll and rockabilly. A must. Shoreditch

Barber and Parlour
Barber and Parlour is for both the gals and guys, located on Redchurch Street. As part of the Soho House group, you expect top notch trendy services. They say they are inspired by men’s grooming the old-fashioned way, but most parlours popping up say that anyways. What is a nice touch here, is that it’s set within a casual cafe offering all day light, healthy dishes, coffees and cold-pressed juices. Make an afternoon of it. Shoreditch

Jack the Clipper
First of all what a fricking cool name! I also love it’s intro, that it is London ‘born and bled’. Come on, how can you not love the cleverness of the play on words. First of all you may be treated by a third generation barber, nothing like keeping it in the family. With this tradition of following in their forefathers footsteps, how can you not feel comfortable going somewhere that obviously has an ongoing passion for what they do. Nicky Clarke
Now this one is a ‘money is no option’ kind of place. Nicky Clarke has been a hairdresser for over 30 years and has even been awarded an OBE. His hands-on experience has included clients such as Gary Kemp, Nick Faldo, Damon Hill and Gary Lineker to name a few. His salon is as luxurious as you would expect. Come on it’s in the heart of Mayfair. Guys if you really want to spoil yourself, the ‘ultimate men’s grooming experience’ will set you back £210 including a haircut, shave, manicure, a choice of a product from his face and shave range. Not sure that Nicky himself will be on hand to run his fingers through you hair though. Mayfair | Birmingham | Manchester
